This is a selection of wine merchants who provide an internet sales service, that I have used. The list is not exhaustive, nor does it offer any sort of guarantees.
First of all some sites that offer High Street wines delivered to your door;
- www.tesco.com ; Tesco home shopping site. Very useful to have your shopping picked and delivered. You can include odd bottles of wine in your regular shopping, if the service is provided in your area, or you can by by the case from their wine warehouse for delivery anywhere in the UK. Wide selection of (everyday) wines at good supermarket prices.
- www.virginwines.com ; Comprehensive list and quick delivery times. I can't get on with their wine wizard though. It asks you for the style of wines you prefer and then tries to recommend ones for you. I always seem to get their entire list as recommendations. Thinking on, that is about right, so maybe it does work after all!!
- www.waitrosedirect.co.uk ; I am pleased that this exists, as I like the Waitrose wine list but am always put off by the 350 mile round trip!!
- www.everywine.co.uk ; A part of the Boothss supermarket group, another 350 mile round trip away, this site offers over 22,000 wines. In theory it does what it says in the name, and tries to list every wine available in the UK. I can't guarantee 100% accuracy with this but it is quite fun trying to find wines that they can't get!!
- www.majestic.co.uk ; on-line store for the company that "invented" mixed case wine wholesaling.
And here are some links to the sites of some more traditional UK wine merchants;
- www.layandwheeler.co.uk ; Founded in 1854 and managed by the sixth generation of the Wheeler family, but it is the wine list that really makes Lay and Wheeler special. Excellent.
- www.bbr.com ; Berry Bros. & Rudd still trade at the site of their original 1698 premises, but also on the internet. Great wine list with some truly great wines (1950 Ch. Petrus @ £12,000.00 for a Magnum), but also listing some wines that I can afford!!
- www.bibendum-wine.co.uk ; Extensive wine list and some great "special purchases" that you will not find in the high street. Not as long a history as the previous two, only started in 1982, but who cares as the product and price is right.
This is not meant to be an extensive list, being my own selection. If you have any recommendations for sites that you feel should be listed here please e-mail me at lists@vinifactor.co.uk and they might get added.
